7 Gift Card Ideas Clover Merchants Can Set Up Before the Holiday Rush
By The Factor4 Clover Team · Published · 3 min read

Seven practical gift card plays you can run on your Clover POS this season — from counter placement to bonus-card promos — with the lead times each one needs.
Gift cards are the last-minute purchase of the holiday season, and for Clover merchants they are also the cheapest inventory you will ever stock. A card costs you cents to print, sells at face value, and a good share of the balance comes back through the door with a customer who spends more than the card is worth. The catch is lead time: printing, artwork approval and staff training all have to happen before the rush, not during it.
Here are seven plays we set up with Clover merchants every fall, roughly in order of how quickly you can get them live.
1. Put the cards where the money is
The single biggest driver of gift card sales is physical placement. Cards kept in a drawer sell when someone asks; cards in an acrylic stand within arm's reach of the Clover terminal sell all day. Put the display at the point where the customer is already reaching for a wallet, keep 20 to 30 cards visible, and restock it nightly so it never looks picked over.
2. Run a bonus-card promotion, not a discount
Instead of discounting your product, give value away in future visits: buy a $50 card, get a $10 bonus card. Your margin stays intact on the $50, and the bonus card brings the customer back in January — historically your slowest month. Set the bonus card to expire in a defined window if your state's rules allow it, and be explicit about the terms on the card carrier.
The bonus card is doing two jobs: it closes the sale in December and it buys you traffic in January.
3. Bundle a card with something physical
A gift card in an envelope feels like an afterthought. A gift card tucked into a mug, a tote, a bag of beans or a small retail item feels like a gift. Bundles also lift your average ticket, and they move slow retail inventory before year end. Ring the bundle as a single item in Clover so your reporting stays clean.
4. Add e-gift cards for the last 72 hours
The week before a holiday, plastic runs out of runway — nobody can wait for shipping. E-gift cards delivered by email or text close those sales at 11pm on the 23rd, and they redeem on the same Clover register as your printed cards. If you have not set them up yet, see our Clover e-gift cards overview.
5. Sell corporate and bulk orders early
Local offices, real-estate teams and property managers buy employee and client gifts in bulk, and they start looking in October. A short email to your regulars offering 25 cards at a small bulk incentive routinely produces a four-figure order. Ask what denominations they want and whether they need the cards individually carriered before you print.
6. Train the ask into every transaction
- Give staff one sentence to use: "Do you need any gift cards while you're here?"
- Post the promo terms where employees can see them, not just customers.
- Walk each employee through activation, balance check and reload on the Clover terminal once, in a slow hour.
- Track sales by employee in Clover reporting and recognise the top seller weekly.
Balance checks are the most common question staff get. Our guide on checking a gift card balance on Clover is a one-page reference you can print for the back counter.
7. Plan the January redemption wave
Every card you sell in December is a liability on your books until it is redeemed, and most of it comes back in the first six weeks of the year. Staff up accordingly, and make sure your team knows how partial redemptions and reloads work so a $50 card with $12 left does not turn into an awkward conversation. For the accounting side, see our guide on gift card liability and breakage.
Lead times to work backwards from
- Custom card artwork: allow about a week for design and your approval.
- Printing and delivery of physical cards: roughly two to three weeks after proof approval.
- E-gift card setup on your Clover account: same day in most cases.
- Staff training and display setup: one slow shift.
If you want cards in hand for Black Friday, start artwork by the first week of November. Multi-location operators should add a few days to consolidate designs and denominations across sites — see multi-location gift cards for how that works on one shared balance pool.
Where to start
Pick two of the seven. Placement plus a bonus-card promo is the highest-return pair for most single-location merchants, and both can be live within a couple of weeks. If you need cards designed and printed, we do the design free with a 50-card minimum and no contract — tell us your business type and we'll quote it.
